2021 Aussie truck sales: who grew, who didn’t

Most – but not all – truck brands had a bumper year in 2021...

While the overall number of new trucks and vans registered in 2021 fell shy of the all-time record set in 2018 by 225 vehicles, the vast majority of brands enjoyed surging sales, despite ongoing pandemic disruption. 

Here’s an at-a-glance breakdown of who sold what across the major market segments... 

Mercedes-Benz took great strides through 2021.

Across the major Australian distribution blocks, it was Daimler (Mercedes-Benz/Freightliner/Fuso) out in front with 6938 new registrations, followed by PACCAR Australia (Kenworth/DAF) with 3556, Volvo Group Australia (Volvo/Mack/UD Trucks) with 3070, and Penske Commercial Vehicles (Western Star/MAN/Dennis Eagle) with 868. However, Isuzu Australia Limited remained well out in front, with a total of 10,175 units. 

While the cumulative 12-month total of 41,404 new vehicles represents an increase of 20.1 per cent over the 2020 tally, it’s also 9.1% up on the total figure for 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic had begun to bite.

Kenworth continued its domination of the heavy-duty segment.

Across the heavy-duty Australian distribution blocks, it was PACCAR Australia (Kenworth/DAF) in front with 3520 new registrations, ahead of Volvo Group Australia (Volvo/Mack/UD Trucks) with 2860, Daimler (Mercedes-Benz/Freightliner/Fuso) with 2232, and Penske Commercial Vehicles (Western Star/MAN/Dennis Eagle) with 785.  

The heavy-duty segment accounted for a total of 12,999 new trucks in 2021, the figure up 22.5% from the previous year’s total and up 2.1% from the 2019 tally. 

Registrations of new Fuso medium-duty models were up by over 35% from the previous year.

In the medium-duty Australian distribution blocks, it was Daimler (Mercedes-Benz/Fuso) in front with 1523 new registrations, followed by Volvo Group Australia (Volvo/UD Trucks) with 210, Penske Commercial Vehicles (MAN/Dennis Eagle) with 83, and PACCAR Australia (DAF) with 36. But Isuzu Australia Limited topped the sales chart with 3067 units, followed by Hino with 2322. 

A total of 7390 new medium-duty trucks were registered in 2021, the figure up 12.2% from the 2020 total but down slightly (-0.3%) on the total set in 2019. 

Over half of all Isuzu sales came from the brand's light-duty line-up.

Daimler is the only major truck distribution block that operates in the light-duty truck market, with its Fuso and Mercedes-Benz brands delivering a total of 3183 new registrations. But once again it’s Isuzu Australia Limited that’s the dominant force, the brand accounting for 5593 units in this segment, ahead of Hino with 3346. 

The light-duty truck segment was on a charge in 2021, with the total of 14,354 new trucks registered up 30.3% from the previous year’s total, and up 25.0% from the total set in 2019. 

On top of its gains in the heavy-duty sphere, Mercedes-Benz continued its stranglehold on the light-duty van segment.

A total of 6661 new light-duty vans were registered in 2021, representing increases of 6.5% over 2020 and 5.3% over 2019.
