The evaluation of Mercedes-Benz's fleet of next-generation prototypes is continuing apace, with Melbourne-based Redstar Transport recently handing back a new Actros 2658 after completing a 32,000-kilometre trial.
Mercedes-Benz is currently trialling a 17-strong fleet of next-generation trucks in Australia and New Zealand, with the data and feedback gained informing the models' development so they're fit for purpose and tuned to local conditions ahead of their volume release – slated for sometime towards the end of next year.
Redstar Transport already has 11 current-generation Actros V8-engined prime movers on its fleet, so it was happy to assist when asked if it would like to evaluate the new model.
"It gives us a chance to offer some feedback and have an input into specification of the Australian versions of these trucks," said Redstar Transport General Manager, Chris Pearce (pictured, right).
The truck was used to haul general freight between Melbourne and Sydney in a B-double configuration at a running weight of between 45 and 50 tonnes – weights the 16-litre OM473 in-line six-cylinder engine took in its stride.
The Euro 6 engine produces 580hp and 2750Nm, with the urge fed to the drive axles via Mercedes-Benz's 12-speed Powershift 3 automated manual transmission.
The Actros trialled by Redstar was driven by veteran driver Stephen Monkhouse (pictured, left), who said the prototype put in a superb performance.
"This is the best truck I've driven and I've been in the game 47 years, so I've kicked around in a few different trucks," he said.
"They've done their homework with this one."
The matt-black evaluation model drew plenty of attention, Mr Monkhouse said.
"Lots of people wanted to have a look at it at the truck stop," he said.
"They might have a particular brand in their head, but they said Benz has kicked a goal with this one."
Mr Pearce was also impressed.
"We were very happy with the numbers, especially knowing there will be some further improvements with the next round of evaluation models," he said.
"There were no major issues at all, just a few small improvements we recommended."
The prototype truck sampled by Redstar is now continuing its evaluation with another leading operator.
The next evaluation trucks to reach Australia will feature hypoid axles and larger fuel and AdBlue tanks, which have all been requested by local operators.
