The Australian Capital Territory’s road authority has joined equivalent bodies in South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria in helping the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) to clear the backlog of road access permits for oversize/overmass loads and special-purpose vehicles, relating to trips conducted wholly within the territory’s borders.
Applications for trips that cross interstate borders should still be directed to the NHVR.
The move brings the ACT into line with temporary assistance provided by state road authorities in the other jurisdictions (bar Tasmania) now overseen by the NHVR, since the Heavy Vehicle National Law came into effect on February 10, 2014.
In a recent media release, the NHVR said it was doing all it could to speed up permit processing.
“The NHVR’s priority is to ensure that permits are processed quickly and is working closely with Roads ACT to assist operators in meeting their timeframe requirements,” the release states.
“The NHVR, together with state, territory and local governments, will monitor these temporary arrangements and consult with industry before returning to standard operations.”
The NHVR’s road access permit processing service has endured something of a baptism of fire since it went live on February 10, with delays spiralling out of control resulting in many affected operators sustaining significant financial losses.
The CEO of the NHVR, Richard Hancock, resigned on Friday, March 14, 2014, citing personal and family health reasons.
