Allison gears up for future drivetrains

New environmental chambers cater for regulatory certification and testing of EV engines

Allison Transmission, which celebrated its centenary in 2015,  has announced it will set up a next-generation new vehicle testing facility in its Indianapolis global headquarters.

The new site will let the heavy-duty automatic transmission specialist operate a pair of environmental chambers capable of simulating temperature extremes, altitude, and on-road conditions that will allow testing for regulatory compliance, on-board diagnostic development, and performance improvements for vehicle functional optimisation.

The site has also been fitted with equipment to “support testing for a wide-range of propulsion systems, including conventional powertrains, alternative fuel, electric hybrid and fully-electric vehicles”, Allison says.

It will also be sued to test the latest in Allison's range of automatic transmissions.

When not in use by Allison the facility will be leased out to third parties looking to perform their own tests.

The complex is expected to start operating next year.
