BREAKING NEWS: Marcos Ambrose has stepped down from driving duties with the DJR Team Penske V8 Supercars squad.
The former series champion rejoined the series this year after a career in NASCAR. Ambrose has struggled for pace since his return to the local championship. Insiders suggest that the move is a precursor to the Tasmanian's retirement.
The team issued the following statement just minutes ago: "DJR Team Penske announced today that Marcos Ambrose has requested to be temporarily relieved as driver of the No. 17 DJR Team Penske Ford, beginning with the Tasmania race. Experienced driver Scott Pye will take over the driving duties for the No. 17 Ford Falcon FG X."
Ambrose made headlines last year when he announced his intention to return to Australia and the V8 Supercars Championship, driving for the newly formed Dick Johnson Racing Team Penske outfit. US entrepreneur and former racing great, Roger Penske, announced last September that he would enter the V8 Supercars championship for the first time in 2015.
Penske Commercial Vehicles holds the Australian and New Zealand distribution rights to Western Star, MAN Truck & Bus and Dennis Eagle, while the Penske Automotive Group acquired power systems distributor MTU Detroit Diesel late last year, recently rebranding the company Penske Power Systems, Inc.
