A Victorian transport firm has turned to Freighter to meet the changing needs of the hay cartage sector.
Bob Potton, owner of Kyneton-based transport firm AMK Containers, says the density of hay – the family-owned firm’s mainstay freight – has increased over the years, necessitating stronger, higher-payload trailers to handle the extra weight.
“Over the years hay quality and density has increased, which means containers have gradually become heavier,” he says.
“It got to a stage where we had to get skels capable of achieving in excess of 30.5 tonnes of payload capacity.”
To handle the greater loads Potton turned to Australian trailer specialist Freighter, purchasing four new tri-axle skels.
Each of the skels has a tare weight of just 3.8 tonnes and features airbag suspension, aluminium wheels, low-profile tyres and LED lights. Four 40-foot twistlocks provide an easy means of securing each container.
“The lightweight model gives us a real advantage when carting heavy containers to and from the ports we deliver to,” says Potton. AMK Containers handles the hay transport needs of four long-established clients, the firm taking the hay from their farms to various ports for overseas export.
The latest additions have brought AMK’s fleet of skel trailers up to 13 – all of them built by Freighter. In fact, it was a Freighter with which Potton first established the company back in 1980.
Potton purchased another Freighter 20 years later, in 2000, and he says that trailer is still going strong.
“The Freighter skel I bought in 2000 is still running extremely well today and I have gradually added more skels since,” he says.
“The steel in the chassis and airbag suspension on that trailer have exceeded all my expectations considering the number of loads it has carried over the years. That alone was enough for me to contact Freighter once more.”
Potton says he’s thoroughly satisfied with his latest Freighter trailers.
“Freighter uses a high-strength steel frame it has engineered to provide low tare weight and maximum payload capacity – two factors we prioritise in the containers segment,” he says.
Potton says AMK Containers enjoys a very strong relationship with Freighter, just as it does with its long-term customers.
“Freighter has looked after me well since day one, supplying a product that is both reliable and performs well,” he says.
“That’s why I had the confidence to go back to Freighter again. When the time comes, I’ll certainly be calling Freighter to add to the 13 skels in my fleet.”
