Kenworth has announced the next model its Legend series, with the official unveiling of the new Legend 900 limited edition at the Brisbane truck show last week. Following on from the hugely successful Legend 950 model, the Legend 900 has been developed to pay homage to the classic American styling that has been a hallmark of the Kenworth brand since the first Australian built models rolled of the line in 1971. The Legend 900 incorporates many special features, all aimed at reviving the memories of the glory days of trucking. The old school bonnet, cab and Aero1 sleeper have been brought back to life, and while the exterior paints a pretty picture with old-style exhausts, lighting, side steps and badges, the interior also harks back to the days of the original T900.
The flat dashboard of the T900 is there, along with hand-made Heritage style gauges, stainless-steel kickplates inside each door and Legend 900 logos embossed in the seats and the rear wall of the sleeper.
Underneath though, it is a modern workhorse, with the latest Cummins X15 engine and (of course) manual Eaton transmission.
The Legend 900 will be available with either 36” or 50” Aero1 or flat-roof modular sleepers.
One day to order
The interesting thing about this limited edition though, is that the number of trucks to be built is not strictly limited. Instead, Kenworth has decided to limit the amount of time available to order one.
Orders for the Legend 900 will only be taken on one day, June 26, 2017. However many trucks are ordered on that day will be built, and the only way to get to your name on one is to get in contact with your local dealer before that date.
It’s fair to say the Legend 900 won’t be a cheap truck, with realistic estimates for a standard version going beyond the $400k mark, but it wouldn’t surprise us if the phone and email systems at Kenworth head office crash on that date.
The interest in the Legend 900 is incredible, with the older guys looking to regain their youth while the younger operators can finally get hold of that truck they drooled over as a kid. And while the price may put a few operators off, the chances are that these trucks will become as coveted as the old Gold Nugget limited editions of yesteryear, and will maintain their value well through their second or third lifecycle. In an era where efficiency and payload are big items on an operator’s shopping list, Kenworth has proven that there is still a place for trucks like these. The Legend 900 will sell well, proving that the heart rules the head for many operators. For those of you who prefer the cab-over Aerodyne, with this model still making up over 30 per cent of local Kenworth production, don’t be surprised if this is the next model to be reinvented.
While Kenworth has never had a problem maintaining market share, models like the Legend 950, Legend 900 and any further Legend releases will certainly do nothing to hinder their market position.
The company will sell over 100 of these trucks in one day, something that many manufacturers struggle to in a year, not only proving the popularity of the Kenworth brand but also the value in building what your customers want. If you want your name on one of them (and who doesn’t?), now is the time to act.
