Arrow adds to Actros fleet

Major container transport company adds a further five new Actros prime movers to its busy fleet
Melbourne-based transport company Arrow Transport recently expanded its fleet with the addition of five new Mercedes-Benz Actros prime movers.
The deal sees what was already one of Australia's largest dedicated Mercedes-Benz fleets grow yet again – the firm had already purchased 36 Actros models through the Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles dealership in Laverton.
Arrow is said to be a top five carrier through the Port of Melbourne and is one of the largest privately owned wharf carriers, hauling 35,000 to 40,000 containers each year.
The latest acquisition saw Arrow purchase five 550hp V8 Actros prime movers. Two of the five have been purchased through Mercedes-Benz's Agility financing program, while two now benefit from a factory maintenance program.
Arrow General Manager Craig Webster (pictured) says he's very happy with the performance of the Mercedes-Benz fleet.
"Ever since we started Arrow in 2011, we have been very conscious of branding," he explains.
"We decided to go with Mercedes for a range of reasons, but part of it was the look of it, the prestige and we also wanted a uniform fleet."
Mr Webster says has been impressed by the reliability and low maintenance costs of the Actros, but also by the level of technology.
"You look at the research and development that goes into Mercedes-Benz cars and it is clear that a lot of that translates across into their trucks," he says.
"I'm a big believer in the European truck; I think the European truck is the way forward."
Arrow was also an early adopter of the A-Double combination sets that move two 40ft containers from the Port of Melbourne to its headquarters in Altona during the day and then to Leongatha in Gippsland (Vic) at night.
The Vawdrey-made trailers operate under the Performance Based Standards scheme, which allows for combinations that don’t fit within standard regulated dimensions but are proven to be safe. They are made from lightweight high-tensile steel so they are extremely light, allowing for heavier loads.
"The A-doubles enable us to run to an end delivery point, spilt the trailers, back the trailers up against the dock, do a live unload and come back again," Webster says.
"With a Super B, the only way you can unload it is to lift it off the trailer."
