Fresh from its appearance at the 2014 Convoy for Cancer Families in Canberra, the Australian Trucking Association’s Safety Truck is on the road once more, and heading for the Nowra Show (February 7-8) on the NSW South Coast.
The truck last appeared at this event in 2012 but in the time since it’s been totally refurbished, and now boasts myriad new road safety games, videos and – in a major drawcard for the littlies – a child’s pedal truck.
Steve Power, the ATA’s Corporate Relations Manager, said the truck will be pushing the road safety message to kids and adults of all ages at Nowra.
“The upgraded Safety Truck has heaps of fun things to play with, like the brand new pedal car track and the colouring tent,” he said.
“Kids can earn their ‘Safety Truck Licence’ by finishing our road safety games.
“Our road safety message is for adults too, with new displays about the trucking industry and the ATA’s top tips for driving safely around heavy vehicles.”
Show President James Thomson said the truck’s appearance was highly relevant for the Nowra community.
“Everything goes through Nowra by road transport and the Princes Highway runs right through the middle of town,” he said.
“However, many drivers, young and old, don’t really understand the general size of a truck or how long it takes to stop.
“Driving around myself, the number of people who try to duck alongside a truck as it’s turning a corner is scary. To have a bit of awareness before you get into a situation like that can only be a good thing.
“Country shows like this are all about the community, and that’s what the Safety Truck is about too – making sure our community knows how to stay safe and work with heavy vehicles.”
The Nowra Show will be held over February 7-8 from 9.00am to 10.30pm, with tickets available at the gate.
