ATA Safety Truck heads north

The Australian Trucking Association's Safety Truck begins a tour of the Northern Territory this week

The Australian Trucking Association's distinctive Safety Truck is heading north, with the travelling road safety exhibition set to embark on a tour of the Northern Territory.

Showcasing a range of heavy-vehicle-related road safety videos and custom road safety apps, the truck will be setting up at three major NT shows throughout July, starting with Alice Springs before moving on to Tennant Creek, Katherine and Darwin.

According to ATA Communications Manager, Steve Power, the Safety Truck is a particularly effective tool when speaking with younger drivers.

"We know a lot of our younger drivers aren't ever specifically taught how to drive safely around heavy vehicles – it's not included in your L or P plate tests," he said.

"With the Northern Territory home to some of the biggest trucking combinations in the world, that skill is more important than ever.

"Inside the Safety Truck, visitors can test out their skills with our road safety app and learn about the truckies' top tips, which include not cutting in front of trucks, staying back from turning vehicles, and avoiding truck blind spots."

The Safety Truck will be open to the public at the following upcoming events:

Alice Springs Show, July 3-4
Tennant Creek Show, July 10
Katherine Show, July 17-18
Royal Darwin Show, July 23-25
