ATA Safety Truck targets Goulburn festival

The Australian Trucking Association's Safety Truck will be heading for Goulburn's Heritage Parade and Picnic on Sunday, March 16
Visitors to the Goulburn Heritage Parade and Picnic, due to be held in the regional NSW city on Sunday, March 16, will gain an insight into the issues facing today’s truck drivers when they stop in at the Australian Trucking Association’s Safety Truck.
The Safety Truck will be highlighting the various safety issues faced by truck drivers at a static display in Goulburn’s Belmore Park from 10am, before the vehicle takes part in the festival’s parade down Auburn Street from 1pm.
Visitors to the Safety Truck will be able to sample a variety of new road safety apps and kids can take to the pedal-cart track – two of several ways the Safety Truck seeks to spread the road safety message and educate the general public about sharing the road with heavy vehicles.
The Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s Road Safety Officer, Tracey Norberg, said the council was pleased to be including the Safety Truck in the city’s 151st anniversary celebrations.
“With the Hume Highway running past town, it’s vitally important for people to be aware of heavy vehicles and how they can stay safe around them on the road,” she said.
The ATA’s Corporate Relations Manager, Steve Power, said the Safety Truck will be spreading an important message in Goulburn.
“The trucking industry is an important part of our community but most people aren’t taught how to stay safe on the road around trucks,” he said.
“With the Safety Truck, we can share important road safety tips like not cutting in front of trucks, staying back from turning vehicles and avoiding truck blind spots.”
In other ATA news, the representative body recently welcomed Nightingale Transport as the latest member of its TruckSafe safety accreditation program.
Established in 1994, Nightingale Transport runs a fleet of 17 trucks and has bases in Jimboomba (Qld) and Unanderra (NSW). It offers a nation-wide service with a focus on open flat-top trailers and OD loads.
According to Glenn Nightingale, Director of Nightingale Transport, gaining TruckSafe accreditation sends an important message to its clients.
“The road is our workplace: it’s essential that our employees and the public are not put at risk by our operations,” he said.
“It’s also important for our customers to know we’re doing the right thing. That’s why we joined TruckSafe.”
