With thousands poised to set off on holiday, the Australian Trucking Association has issued a timely reminder to truck drivers and indeed all motorists to stay alert and stay alive when travelling by road this Christmas.
ATA Chief Executive Stuart St Clair said it was vital that motorists drive within their limits and be on the lookout for the signs of fatigue.
"With the family holiday or a big festive event to get to, many people feel pressured to push through fatigue or drive faster to cut the journey time," he said.
"But it's better to be late to a party than on time for an accident.
"Stick to the speed limit and avoid driving when tired. If you feel sleepy behind the wheel, pull over and have a nap, or share the job with another qualified driver."
Mr St Clair said truck drivers should consider the increased holiday traffic when planning their schedules over the coming weeks.
"The roads are always busy at this time of year – it’s not a surprise," he said.
"Trucking businesses and drivers need to schedule in time to safely deal with traffic delays.
"Professional drivers should keep an eye out for holiday motorists who may not be familiar with the roads, or who are towing a boat or caravan for the once-a-year holiday. Be patient, stay well back and share the road safely."
To highlight a number of heavy vehicle road safety issues, the ATA has released a short animated video which will be aired on television stations around the country. The video, which can be viewed below, urges motorists to stay clear of a heavy vehicle's blind spots, to avoid cutting in in front of a heavy vehicle, and to avoid overtaking a turning heavy vehicle.
