ATANSW applauds telematics uptake

Representative body ATANSW has applauded the extensive voluntary uptake of vehicle tracking technology across the road freight industry
ATANSW has endorsed the road freight industry's widespread use of vehicle tracking systems, following the announcement by Transport Certification Australia yesterday (October 29) that around 25,000 trucks across Australia are now fitted with telematics systems.
Telematics technology allows truck operators to utilise Australia's Intelligent Access Program, giving higher mass vehicles access to a far broader network of approved routes in exchange for the remote monitoring the technology affords.
The Chief Executive Officer of the TCA, Chris Koniditsiotis, said the uptake of the technology has skyrocketed in recent years.
"This [25,000 units] represents a 65 per cent increase in the number of IVUs [In-Vehicle Units] since a similar survey was conducted two years ago," he said.
"While it is recognised that not all transport operators need the IAP for their operations, it is pleasing to see that the industry is making IVU procurement decisions with a focus on value for money and performance."
ATANSW Manager Julie Broadbent said telematics technology is unlocking a wide range of benefits for road freight operators.
"Our members are acutely aware of how technology like this can provide advantages for their business and customers," she said.
"When we see crashes involving heavy vehicles, the knee-jerk response has been to discuss mandating black box technology in all trucks. However, many operators already have this technology installed in their fleets.
"While this technology may help police in crash investigations on occasion, its main benefit is to help operators ensure freight is moved in the most safe and efficient manner possible.
"ATANSW has long supported the voluntary uptake of technology such as GPS. We will continue to encourage the adoption of technologies that provide safety, environmental and commercial benefits for our members and community."

The statement comes just days after the local media launch of Isuzu Telematics – Isuzu Australia Limited's locally developed and produced factory telematics system (Isuzu software screenshot shown). Click here for the trucksales.com.au review of the Isuzu Telematics system.
