UD Trucks' Extra Mile Challenge has been run and won, with Steve Gould of Adelaide's B&D Crane Trucks triumphing after 12 weeks of competition.
UD Trucks runs the Extra Mile Challenge in numerous markets around the globe, with the driver-skill-based competition assessing steerers across a wide range of criteria.
UD says the aim of the competition is to see how improved driver behavior can translate to safer driving, reductions in fuel consumption, and less wear and tear on vehicles.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the cancellation of the international finals of the Extra Mile Challenge, which were to be held at UD Trucks headquarters in Ageo, Japan, a virtual ceremony will shortly take place to announce the individual winners from each participating nation.
The competition saw a number of drivers hand-picked by UD Trucks customers to take part, with 12 drivers from three UD Trucks dealerships ultimately participating.
Supported by dedicated dealership Fuel Watch Managers, the drivers were assessed over three months and monitored by their truck's telematics system, with the driver achieving the highest percentage change in driver score crowned the winner.
Mr Gould achieved an incredible 230 per cent increase from his original starting position, also sealing the competition with the highest driver score of 89 out of 100.
Throughout the competition, Mr Gould had regular check-ins with his Fuel Watch Manager, Chris Moar, from South Central Truck & Bus in Adelaide.
"We had several conversations where I was able to use the data I had from the truck's telematics system to update Steve on his progress," said Mr Moar.
"We also talked about the best ways to improve in the various areas, so he could consistently improve his score and maintain safe and fuel-efficient driving practices."

B&D Crane Trucks was delighted with Steve's result, as it is with the performance of its new UD trucks.
"We have already found the new Quons in our fleet to be fuel-efficient trucks," said Bob Miller, owner B&D Crane Trucks.
"I'm delighted to see the improvements that can be made to increase that saving even further, not to mention how considered driving improves road safety for all road users."
While the live-streamed virtual ceremony will be hosted in Japan, Mr Gould will be celebrating his win with South Central Truck & Bus and UD Truck representatives in Adelaide on March 16, 2021.
