AZMEB trailer ups the ante

Queensland bulk haulage firm De Gunst Transport says its new AZMEB HVST trailer hauls double the load of its old walking floor trailers
Bundaberg-based De Gunst Transport recently took delivery of a new AZMEB High Volume Side Tipper (HVST) trailer, and it says the upgrade has effectively doubled its productivity when hauling bagasse, a low-density byproduct of sugar cane.
Founded with a single truck by Bob De Gunst in 1988, the firm’s fleet now comprises 60 prime movers and 140 trailers, and it handles a number of contracts for the region’s mining and sugar industries.
Bob says keeping abreast of technological innovations has been crucial to the company’s on-going success, and that the move to the new AZMEB HVST represents yet another stride forward.
“For a number of years we have used walking floor trailers to transport bagasse for the local sugarcane industry,” he says.
“More recently I approached local trailer manufacturer, AZMEB, about its side-tipping trailer. It doubles the amount of drops we are able to make per day.”
The AZMEB trailer features a lower tub and a hinged upper body, lending it the appearance and capacity of two tubs on the one trailer. AZMEB says the side tipper can handle up to 85m³ per single trailer or 120m³ per B-double, while it can be unloaded up to 10 times faster than a traditional walking floor trailer.
With a 450-grade wear plate steel tub and an aluminium upper body, AZMEB’s HVST is available in a variety of formats, including rigid body, lead, tag, B-double and road train.
While the trailer can take high volumes of low-density loads, the manufacturer points out it can also handle high-density loads by only filling the lower half of the two-part body, making it a practical and flexible option.
With De Gunst Transport making numerous short trips between the sugar mill and the storage site, Bob says the new trailer’s greater capacity and shorter unload time are making a big difference to his bottom line.
“We are now achieving 48 tips per day,” he says. “We managed only half that with walking floors, so it’s an enormous step forward.”
Bob says he can see more AZMEB HVST trailers in his future.
“Certainly when some of my walking floors are due for replacement, I will be looking at replacing them with AZMEB HVSTs – with our recent results I’d be crazy not to,” he says.
