Mercedes-Benz Trucks has rolled out its high-tech Active Brake Assist 4 electronic braking system in Australia.
Launched just ahead of the 2017 Brisbane Truck Show, the system is now available for Mercedes-Benz prime movers and the brand's new range of rigids (18t and up), the latter to be revealed at the Queensland expo late next month.
The pedestrian-focussed technology first debuted in Europe last year, and warns the driver of an imminent collision with a moving pedestrian before initiating partial braking. This then gives the driver extra time to brake to a stop or carry out an evasive manoeuvre.
Active Brake Assist 4 represents an evolution of Active Brake Assist 3, the prime difference being the latest system is far more sensitive, and able to detect a pedestrian in "almost all traffic situations".
The system relies on radar technology already employed in some Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, and is part of a Safety Pack that comprises Lane Keeping Assist, Proximity Control Assist and Attention Assist.
Mercedes-Benz Trucks says that over 90 per cent of new Actros trucks delivered since the new model's local release have been fitted with the potentially life-saving technology. "We take safety very seriously at Mercedes-Benz and we are pleased to be able to offer this feature to our Australian customers," says Mercedes-Benz Truck and Bus Director, Michael May.
"Along with the proven efficiency, comfort and reliability of the new model, the safety features of Mercedes-Benz trucks give us a clear competitive advantage."
