'Benz unveils new Actros engine

Four years after its introduction in Europe, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the first evolution of its OM 471 12.8-litre, six-cylinder engine

Mercedes-Benz has premiered the latest generation of its 12.8-litre truck engine in Europe, with the new OM 471 six-cylinder turbo-diesel said to offer fuel economy savings of up to three per cent, along with a reduction in running costs and carbon dioxide emissions.

Revealed in Germany recently, the new engine is available in five different horsepower ratings, with the flagship spec delivering 390kW (530hp) at 1600rpm and 2600Nm at 1100rpm.

Furthermore, three of the five engines are classed by Mercedes-Benz as 'top torque' models, with an extra 200Nm placed at the driver's disposal whenever top gear is selected in the PowerShift 3 transmission.

"This strategy has the effect of reducing the frequency of gear changes and increasing transportation speed without any negative impact on fuel consumption," says Mercedes-Benz.

The new OM 471 features the next generation of Mercedes-Benz's X-Pulse injection system, where the maximum rail pressure has been increased from 900 to 1160 bar to give a maximum injection pressure of 2700 bar.

Other changes include a move from a seven-hole injection nozzle to eight, modifications to the piston bowl geometry, and an increase in compression ratio from 17.3:1 to 18.3:1, plus a reduced rate of exhaust gas recirculation.

Mercedes-Benz says the changes add up to greater efficiency across the entire rev range, while AdBlue consumption for the SCR system has fallen to that of earlier Euro 5 engines.

In Europe the new OM 471 engine has been released in the following ratings:

>> 310kW (421hp) at 1600rpm, 2100Nm at 1100rpm
>> 330kW (449hp) at 1600rpm, 2200Nm at 1100rpm
>> 350kW (476hp) at 1600rpm, 2300Nm at 1100rpm
>> 375kW (510hp) at 1600rpm, 2500Nm at 1100rpm
>> 390kW (530hp) at 1600rpm, 2600Nm at 1100rpm

Australian availability for the engine is yet to be announced, but with the new generation of Mercedes-Benz trucks not due to go on sale here before the second half of 2016 – and with those trucks largely adhering to Euro 5 emissions compliance – chances are we won't be seeing this next-gen Euro 6 OM 471 for some time yet.
