BMW tests LNG with Iveco Stralis
Iveco claims big drops in emissions and huge savings in fuel costs using natural gasGerman car manufacturer BMW Group has completed a pilot project in collaboration with Iveco to test LNG-powered trucks for their logistics operations using an Iveco Stralis designed for long-haul transport.
The project tested an LNG-powered Iveco Stralis NP prime mover for the German car manufacturer’s logistics operations. Iveco says that the Stralis NP is the first natural gas truck designed specifically for long-haul transport.
Iveco has now further expanded the range with the Stralis NP 460 which features automated transmission designed for the most demanding long-distance jobs.
The latest test revealed that the LNG truck was able to cover the 530km round trip between Steyr and Regensburg with one tank of gas. Iveco says that this is the alternative fuel that delivers the best results in heavy goods transport. An electric truck, for example, the 530km round trip would require recharging several times.
Dr. Thomas Irrenhauser, who supervised the pilot operation on behalf of BMW sees LNG as a "reasonable, sustainable alternative to conventional diesel" in the long term. In direct comparison with diesel, emissions of nitrogen oxide are up to 60 per cent lower, and noise levels during operation are up to 50 per cent lower. Particulate matter emissions are negligible.

Mr Lahutte said that Iveco was the first to acknowledge the potential of natural gas in the commercial transport industry: this fuel can deliver 20 to 40 per cent savings in fuel costs, up to a 15 per cent reduction in fuel consumption compared to diesel, and provides the added benefit of quiet operation at less than 71dB on the Piek Quiet Truck Test.
Trucks running on LNG improve air quality by significantly reducing CO2 and nitrogen oxide emissions and virtually eliminate particulate matter.
