BTS: Iveco previews local E6 Stralis

Iveco Australia’s engineering team is well advanced in the local development of Euro6-rated Stralis models, with an example on display at the Brisbane Truck Show
While Euro6 Stralis models have been available in Europe for some time, Iveco is undertaking a comprehensive local validation program and applying the necessary adjustments to ensure the Euro6 power plants will operate efficiently and reliably in Australian conditions and applications.
The Euro6 Stralis ATi on show in Brisbane features an 11-litre Cursor common rail engine, up from the 10-litre displacement, unit injection set-up in the current model – despite the increase in capacity and a greater power output, the larger engine also offers improved fuel efficiency and a less stressed duty cycle.
Other features of the new engine are an electronically-managed variable geometry turbocharger (EVGT) for improved efficiency and output, and Iveco’s new ‘HI-SCR’ system as launched in the recently-released E6 Eurocago models.
The HI-SCR system is a single after-treatment system featuring passive DPF (diesel particulate filter). HI-SCR provides many benefits compared to EGR and SCR equivalents, including reduced fuel consumption, reduced tare weight and improved engine braking (up to 30 per cent better).
Iveco says the system also uses fewer components for increased simplicity and does not require driver regeneration, providing reduced vehicle downtime and absolving the risk of the vehicle entering ‘limp home’ more in event of driver neglect.
Iveco ANZ Product Manager, Marco Quaranta, said that several E6 Stralis ATi models were currently in the midst of real world testing in local customer fleets.
“For the last few months we have had a number of the development Stralis models placed with fleet customers Australia-wide,” Mr Quaranta said.
“Feedback from the operators to date has been very positive – the power, torque and drivability of the vehicles has impressed the users while returning excellent fuel figures, and of course lower emissions.
“The simplicity and user-friendliness of the HI-SCR system is also drawing praise with operators recognising the benefits of not needing to manually regenerate.
“When eventually launched here, the E6 Stralis range will provide Australian buyers with access to the latest Iveco engine expertise and they can have the confidence that the vehicles have been fully-prepared for the local market.”
