UD Trucks Australia unveiled the new heavy-duty Quon model during a media presentation at the Brisbane truck show last week.
In launching the new model, Acting Vice-President of UD Trucks Australia, Mark Strambi, made it clear that the heavy-duty market was firmly in UD’s sights, saying: “Our other Japanese competitors have been playing in that market for a very long time. We haven’t, so we’ve purposely shifted our focus towards the heavy-duty segment, and we’ve done that very successfully.”
The new Quon brings with it many improvements over the previous generation, and is the first full re-development in 13 years. This also means it gains the full benefit of the technology available within the Volvo Group, including engines, transmissions and safety equipment.
Available in various 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 configurations, the new Quon is powered by the 11-litre GH11 engine, with outputs up to 460hp and 2200Nm. This engine uses a combination of EGR, SCR and DPF to meet the current Japanese pPNLT emissions standards which, in some areas, exceeds Euro6 standards.
Fitted as standard across the range is the 12sp Escot VI AMT transmission, and while the Escot name remains in the UD brand, this transmission could also be found in other products bearing the I-shift or M-drive name.
This driveline not only promises smooth performance, but UD is also claiming a five per cent reduction in fuel consumption over the previous model Quon. It’s also worth noting that 6x4 models are now also fitted with diff locks and cross locks as standard.
In terms of safety, the Quon comes with a long list of features including disc brakes all round, lane departure warning, driver alert warning and forward collision avoidance systems. Adding to the impressive list of safety features is the standard fitment of stability control, where engine output is controlled and automatic braking applications are made to maintain the stability of the vehicle.
These features combine to make the Quon not only one of the safest Japanese trucks, but one of the safest trucks overall in the heavy-duty segment.
The cab has also received a makeover, with the emphasis being on the driver. Access and egress have been improved through improved grab handles, and only two steps (albeit big steps) up to the floor of the cab. Inside the cab, the update includes a new dash, with a neat and clean finish, easy-to-use switch gear and plenty of storage. There are also 12 volt and 24 volt power outlets to run all of your gadgets. The new instrument cluster, including a full colour LCD display to cover various engine and vehicle information, is simple and easy to read.
A new steering wheel design incorporates the controls for the information display, as well as the cruise control functions, meaning a driver can operate either system without the need to take their hands off the wheel. This is something that has been missing in Japanese trucks, and is a welcome improvement on the Quon.
The new Quon range not only provides a huge advancement over previous Quon models but, in terms of standard equipment, it raises the bar in the market for heavy-duty Japanese trucks here in Australia. Given the applications the various models will target, there’s not much left to be desired in terms of safety, comfort and driveline.
In basic terms, the new Quon offers all the features of its Volvo and Mack stable mates, but in a budget-priced package aimed more at the local, regional and vocational markets. Given that UD has almost doubled its share in the heavy-duty market over the past twelve months, the new Quon should see the brand strengthen its presence in the market place.
