Cat CT630LS delivers the goods in mining

A Queensland-based mining industry freight specialist has chosen Cat's flagship model, the CT630LS, as its first new prime mover
Queensland's AMS Mining Transportation Services has enhanced its fleet with a new Cat CT630LS and says the purchase – its first brand new prime mover – is delivering many benefits.
Based in Moranbah in Queensland's Bowen Basin coalfields, AMS Mining Transportation began as an auto electrical business specialising in trucks and mining equipment.
Today the family-owned firm transports a diverse range of loads over both short and long distances, with everything from tilt-tray trucks to road trains running on sealed roads to rough bush tracks.
The Cat CT630LS is the latest of three prime movers that the company uses to haul a variety of trailers, from low loaders, drop decks and extendable flat tops to a 14.6m 'super tilt' trailer that lifts to 36 degrees. The latter is used for recovery work and transporting containers and work sheds.
Company Principal Ashley Dann says Cat wasn't top of its list when the time came to purchase a new truck.
"We weren’t limited by price and I have to admit Cat wasn’t even a front-runner when we went to the Brisbane Truck Show last year to look at what we might buy for our first new prime mover," he says.
"The fact is we had a few other brands in mind but the standard of Cat’s show stand and the professional response of the people we spoke to, well – the more we looked at it, the more Cat stood out. We thought long and hard about it, but eventually it became obvious Cat was the right truck for the business."
Dann says the CT630LS ultimately represented good value for money, while his company's high regard for Cat engines has flowed on to an appreciation of Cat's service network – and especially of the service offered by Hastings Deering Cat Trucks at Richlands in Brisbane's west.
The Cat's styling was also a drawcard, as were its many practicalities.
"It’s a practical cab and vision over the bonnet is really good but, for me, the big assets are the sleeper and the engine," says Mr Dann.
"The fact that there’s no EGR or SCR emissions system is certainly a positive and as for the bunk there’s plenty of room to stand up, it’s well laid out and there’s everything I need without it being overdone. It’s a good set-up."
