Utes are becoming increasingly popular right across the globe, and are increasingly purchased to complement lifestyle pursuits as much as they are for purely workhorse applications. As companies like Mercedes-Benz and Renault jump on the bandwagon, more are likely to follow.
Case in point, Citroen.
Although the company has not confirmed a ute just yet, it has announced that it will show a concept car based on the C4 Cactus that "revisits the spirit of the legendary Méhari" at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show in early September.
The Méhari (pictured) was a light utility vehicle that emerged in the late 1960s. The quirky ute was based on the iconic Citroen 2CV, one of Citroen's most successful cars, and the utility vehicle had a two-decade production run.
Citroen is likely to deploy a 'lifestyle'-oriented ute, considering it's based on the C4 Cactus SUV, akin to Hyundai's Santa Cruz crossover ute, or possibly more like an SUV with a removable roof.
Citroen says the new concept ute will be "a fresh and invigorating version of the C4 Cactus".
