Cleanaway expands IVECO ACCO fleet

The waste specialist recently added 23 examples of IVECO's Euro 6 vocational truck to service a new local government contract in Melbourne

Heavyweight refuse management company Cleanaway has added 23 new IVECO ACCO trucks to its massive fleet, the 6x4 and Euro 6 compliant vehicles destined to service a new waste collection contract with the City of Wyndham, in Melbourne's west.

The trucks have been fitted with Bucher Municipal sideloader compactor bodies – 14 of them have 22m³ units for waste, six have 35m³ units for recyclables, and three have 22m³ units for organics.

Clean and safe

According to Peter Buissink (pictured, below), Cleanaway Municipal Contracts Manager and a 25-year veteran of the logistics industry, the Euro 6 IVECO ACCO brings with it a host of benefits.

"The combination of Euro 6 emission performance and long list of safety features is very attractive for Cleanaway," he said.

"These features are next level, and as well as ensuring Cleanaway is operating in the safest and most sustainable way possible, having the latest truck fleet also helps generate new business."

Euro 6 power

The trucks are powered by an 8.7-litre six-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces up to 310hp and 1300Nm (a 360hp/1650Nm rating is also available).

IVECO says this Euro 6 engine delivers better fuel efficiency compared to earlier Euro 5 models, while the company's unique Hi-SCR technology – utilising a single after-treatment system and passive diesel particulate filter – doesn't require regeneration downtime.

The engine is mated to an Allison Generation Five six-speed automatic transmission, with the urge delivered to Meritor rear axles with driver-controlled diff locks.

Meanwhile standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, stability control, daytime running lights, and disc brakes all round. Options include lane departure warning, driver attention support and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Warm reception

Several weeks after the trucks began service, Mr Buissink said he's received plenty of positive feedback from drivers.

"The way these trucks drive on the road is beautiful, according to the comments we've received from our drivers," he said.

"They mention the comfort, how quiet the cabin is and how great the air conditioning works – these are all important factors in creating an attractive working environment for them.

"The trucks are also equipped with nine cameras that provide both live monitoring as well as historical monitoring; this is useful to validate customer complaints of missed bins which form part of contract KPIs."

The new trucks are being maintained by an IVECO dealership under a seven-year contract maintenance agreement.

"We do have a workshop but it's not equipped to handle these large volumes," Mr Buissink said.

"Leaving the maintenance to IVECO allows us to concentrate on our core business and also provides us the scope to service the vehicles after hours, so that we minimise downtime as much as possible."
