It's less than a week to Victoria's inaugural Geelong Camp Quality Convoy, which will see trucks and motorcycles thundering their way from Avalon Airport to the Geelong Showgrounds on Sunday, February 15.
The convoy itself will be preceded by a charity auction at auctioneers Ritchie Brothers on this Friday (February 13), where an incredible $90,000-worth of goods and services will go under the hammer. Headlining the auction will be a brand new Volkswagen Golf 90TSI, courtesy of Geelong dealership Rex Gorell Volkswagen.
Other auction items include a holiday to Port Douglas, real estate services (including free commission on the sale of a property), DECA driving courses and a $1000 fuel voucher, among many others.
There is no reserve set for any of the auction items, so bidders could very well walk away with a bargain while also helping a great cause.
The auction will take place at Ritchie Brothers at 200 O'Briens Road, Corio, from 6.30pm.
Proceeds from the auction and the convoy will go to Camp Quality, a national charity that provides a range of services and support for kids living with cancer, and their families.
Organisers say 120 vehicles have registered for the event so far, but they're expecting a significant flood of last-minute entries. Registration for a truck or motorcycle costs just $50.
trucksales.com.au will be there in the middle of it, and riding shotgun in DECA's Freightliner Argosy.
Geelong Convoy President, Graeme Reid, says the event is about more than fundraising.
"The monetary objective is not all that we're focussed on," he says.
"It's the first year this event has been held so we need to ensure everything runs smoothly, but it's also about the awareness – that's how we also will gauge its success.
"The money is one side, because Camp Quality gets no funding, but it’s the awareness raised that we will look to as a guide for our success as well."
After the bikes and then trucks depart Avalon Airport from 10.00am on Sunday, the convoy will culminate in a family fun day at Geelong Showgrounds. Located at 79 Breakwater Road, Breakwater, gates open from 10.00am and entry is free. In addition to admiring all the trucks and motorcycles, families will get to enjoy a range of live entertainment acts, with the day to conclude at 3.00pm.
Mr Reid says the organisers will also be staging numerous giveaways on the day, with 'best dressed' prizes for those who turn up in fancy dress – kids and adults alike.
