Some of the truck industry's brightest minds gathered at ComVec 2014 recently, which was hosted by the Commercial Vehicle Industry Association of Queensland (CVIAQ) at Brisbane's Royal International Convention Centre over May 27-28.
The CVIAQ reports delegate numbers were up some 25 per cent from the last ComVec conference, with nearly 160 people taking part in the packed two-day program. A variety of pertinent truck-industry topics were thrust into the spotlight, including technology, vehicle standards and regulations, innovation, and government policy.
Delegates came from a broad array of truck-related firms and organisations, with bodies such as the CVIAQ, Australian Trucking Association, Truck Industry Council, National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, the Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure, and many state and territory governments, all represented.
In all, over 20 presentations were delivered, with topics including vehicle and driver safety technology, lighting technology, various legislative updates and a progress report from the NHVR.
Sessions also focused on performance based standards, truck and trailer aerodynamics, and truck accident statistics, while new truck model presentations were made by Cat Trucks, Isuzu Australia Limited, Smith Electric, Volvo Group Australia, Hino Motor Australia, DAF Trucks, Iveco Trucks Australia and Fuso Trucks Australia.
The latter saw engineering staff from the various brands deliver detailed information on the technical changes to their respective latest models, allowing body builders in particular to gain important insights into these vehicles' final fit-out.
ComVec 2014 also saw the CVIAQ's CEO, Brett Wright, announce the appointment of Ken Cowell, of KD Cowell & Associates, to the new CVIAQ role of National Policy Director.
According to a CVIAQ media release, Mr Cowell's appointment will allow the body to "spearhead its work on the Strategic Vehicle Safety and Environment Group (SVSEG) Industry Working Group for the implementation of Phase 2 of the National Heavy Vehicle Braking Strategy". Mr Cowell will also head up two further projects, the details of which will be released shortly.
