Drifting in a Freightliner?

You won't believe what stunt driver Mike Ryan can do behind the wheel of a souped-up Freightliner race truck…

First there was the viral YouTube clip of Ken Block drifting his Ford Fiesta race car through the streets of San Francisco, and now we have the truck equivalent: a tyre-smoking, sideways-drifting, frenetic Freightliner free-for-all through the crowded docks of Long Beach Harbour, Los Angeles.

Stunt driver Mike Ryan is the maestro behind the wheel of the Super-Turbo Castrol Freightliner and once you’ve seen the clip it’s no surprise to learn his skills have previously taken him all the way in events such as the Pikes Peak hillclimb.

Ryan goes head-to-head with Daniel Leavitt in the five-minute clip, the latter in a worked Nissan 240SX, but the truck is the star of the show.

Of course there’s some allusion to a plot, plenty of overacting and a sponsor list a mile long, but who cares? The supreme driving skill on show makes it all worthwhile – and shows Freightliner in a whole new light.
