Mercedes-Benz Australia is ramping up its efforts in the waste industry, with the arrival of a dual-control version of its Econic.
Now with an additional steering wheel on the left-hand side, Mercedes-Benz says it's the only truck in its class to boast a Euro VI engine, electronic stability control and a low-entry cab design.
The dual-control Econic was designed in Worth, Germany, in response to Australian customer requests. The design means the driver can sit on the side of the vehicle closest to the kerb, making it easier to use a side-loader bin collection system.
Powered by a 7.7-litre diesel engine that produces 299hp, Mercedes-Benz says the Euro VI engine has reduced emissions and particulate matter by up to 90 per cent when compared to the Euro V engine, while it's been mated to an Allison six-speed automatic transmission.
On the safety front, the truck's electronic stability program is complemented by an electronic braking system and an anti-lock braking system. Large panoramic windows deliver excellent vision – a crucial factor in tight and often busy urban surrounds – while the cab is rated to ECE-R29 crash test regulations.
The smooth ride is afforded by air suspension on all axles and suspension driver's seats on both sides.
Mercedes-Benz Trucks Sales Manager, Andrew Assimo, said the arrival of the dual-control Econic would spur the model on to greater heights.
"The Econic was already a class-leading vehicle; the only thing missing was dual control," he said.
"We are very excited to introduce a dual control version, which we think ticks all the boxes for Australian waste collection operators."
