Fuso says a total of eight all-electric E-Cell Canter models have begun testing with eight customers in Portugal, where the Euro-spec model is produced at Mitsubishi's Tramagal plant in Abrantes, north-east of Lisbon.
Fuso says its first all-electric light-duty truck produces zero local emissions and is almost silent, while it has a working range of over 100 kilometres.
The E-Cell Canter will now be trialled for 12 months by the City of Lisbon, the City of Porto, the City of Abrantes, road freight firm Transporta, energy supplier REN and national Portuguese postal service CTT.
According to Dr Albert Kirchmann, President & CEO of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation, the model highlights the manufacturer's recent advances in alternative power.
"The Fuso Canter E-Cell allows us once again to emphasise our leadership in the field of alternative drive systems," he said.
"Led by Daimler Trucks' advanced engineering team based in Japan, our colleagues in Portugal have now realised yet another big milestone, bringing the latest Daimler Trucks innovation to the world."
With a GVM of six tonnes the E-Cell Canter has a three-tonne payload, while its electric motor delivers up to 110kW (150hp) and 650Nm. A single-speed transmission relays power to the rear axle while the truck's top speed is limited to 90km/h.
The power stems from four lithium-ion batteries with a nominal capacity of 48.4kWh. Standard charging is said to take seven hours, while a rapid-charging system can reduce this to just one hour.
