The latest data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) shows a total of 1,849,077 new commercial vehicles were registered in Europe last year, the figure equating with growth of 7.6 per cent over 2013.
That total comprises 1,535,125 light-duty vehicles (vans) up to 3.5 tonnes; 62,433 medium-duty vehicles from 3.5 to 16 tonnes; 217,958 heavy-duty vehicles over 16 tonnes; and 33,561 coaches and buses over 3.5 tonnes.
Many nations posted double-digit growth for new commercial-vehicle registrations, including Germany (up 4.8 per cent), the UK (up 10.8 per cent), Italy (up 13.9 per cent) and Spain (up 31.6 per cent), while France essentially remained steady (down 0.4 per cent) and new registrations in Finland and the Netherlands contracted (by 3.0 and 2.9 per cent respectively).
The heavy-duty market still fell, however, its 217,958 registrations representing a drop of 6.1 per cent, with the majority of the overall growth stemming from the light-duty market (which was up 11.3 per cent).
