Ford Ranger storms to the top of the sales charts
Blue oval tastes national sales victory in Australia for first time in 12 years Ford has tasted its first piece sales silverware in 12 years, after the venerable Ranger topped national new car sales for the month of September.
The popular utility finished ahead of the Toyota Hilux in a one-two hay-hauler finish, the Ranger securing 4318 sales to the Hilux’s 3822.
The win marks Ford’s first overall sales victory since the BAII Falcon in August, 2005. The September record was only the third time Ranger has outsold HiLux.

The utility one-two was one highlight in an otherwise flat month for the new car market; one in which the market finished 2.4 per cent down compared with September, 2016. A dip in private sales was the major catalyst, though the market still remains on track for a record year, up 0.2 per cent year-to-date.
Elsewhere, the Corolla placed third (3055) and the Mazda3 finished fourth (2776), while nostalgic buyers splurged for some of the final examples of the home-grown Commodore (fifth, 2547) in its final full month on sale.
You’d need to go back to June 2016 to find a better month for Commodore sales.
The Holden Commodore is selling up a storm… but for how long?
Toyota remains the undisputed popular choice among Australian buyers. In September, the Japanese marque ran away with 17,337 sales – good enough for 17.3 per cent of a highly fragmented market.
Mazda consolidated second overall (10.3 per cent) ahead of Hyundai (8.1 per cent), Ford and Holden.
Ford’s status at the top shows little sign of waning. In 2018, it will launch a Raptor version of the Ranger (first image), and sales of the Mustang are expected to continue strongly into the future.
