
Ford Australia and Deakin University have revealed a Fire Response Unit based on the Ford Ranger Super Duty, exploring whether a smaller, highly capable emergency vehicle could reach incidents before larger firefighting appliances.
Developed with XL Service Bodies, the concept made its debut at the AFAC conference in Melbourne.

At first glance, the Fire Response Unit looks like a compact fire appliance, complete with emergency lighting, high-visibility livery and a custom-built service body.
Ford says the concept is designed to support, not replace, traditional fire trucks.
The idea is that trained responders could arrive with essential equipment and begin assessments, communications, first aid or initial fire suppression while larger appliances are still on the way.
The Ranger Super Duty was chosen thanks to its 4500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM), payload capacity and off-road capability.

Engineers also used virtual reality and computer modelling to finalise the layout of the equipment compartments before the vehicle was built.
"We are not trying to replace traditional fire trucks or the firefighters who crew them," said Ford Pro Conversion Development Manager Jeremy Welch.
"But a Ranger Super Duty could carry the equipment needed to manage those critical first few minutes while the cavalry is on its way."

While the Fire Response Unit remains a concept, it showcases how the Ranger Super Duty platform could be adapted for specialist emergency service roles.
Ford says the project also demonstrates the capability of its Ford Pro Convertor network, which specialises in custom commercial vehicle builds.
