Fuso 515 Superlow City Cab: Quickspin

Fuso’s Superlow is the only truck in its segment that can easily clear 2.1 metres
At a recent media event around Geelong, the trucking media was introduced to a truck that Fuso released some time ago and one that has been a bit of a well-kept secret for a while.
Some canny operators have twigged to the fact that the Fuso 515 Superlow City Cab is the only truck in its class that can fit under the 2.1-metre barrier with a comfortable margin.
The 515 Superlow has an overall height of 2010mm unladen so it has no problems with low carparks, or places where pickup and delivery requires very low clearances.
But just because the Superlow is short, it doesn’t mean that it lacks anything in the performance stakes. In fact the Superlow retains the same strength and practicality as its regular sibling, the 515 City Cab.
The Canter 515 Super Low City Cab has a GVM of 4500kg, which means it can be driven on a car licence, and with a GCM of 8000kg, it’s a very versatile truck. It comes standard with the quick shifting six-speed Duonic automated manual transmission (AMT), which makes life easier for the driver.
“We are the only Japanese truck manufacturer to offer this type of product and we know it is the perfect model for operators in certain industries,” said Fuso Product Management and Engineering Senior Manager, Romesh Rodrigo at the event.
“Hitting the ceiling in a covered carpark is an expensive mistake and being denied access to key locations because your truck is too tall can limit the effectiveness of operators to service their customer’s needs. That’s why Fuso has delivered this clever solution,” Mr Rodrigo added.
The Canter 515 is also fitted with independent front suspension, which provides excellent ride as we found out on the drive program.
The 515 Super Low City Cab runs a 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that generates 110kW of power between 2840rpm and 3500rpm and 370Nm of torque from 1350rpm to 2840rpm.
Along with the other models in the Canter range, the 515 Super Low City Cab has just received key upgrades.
These include a new driver and passenger seat with black trim, including hard-wearing vinyl side bolsters, new-look black dashboard and door panels, centre seat storage, a floor tray, an overhead storage compartment, an LED room light and a Hill Start Assist feature for Duonic models.
The Fuso trucks a big on safety with dual airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and electron brake distribution (EBD) plus an exhaust brake and transmission-mounted park brake.
And the Superlow doesn’t miss out on technology with a 6.1-inch touchscreen that incorporates a GPS with heavy vehicle weight, length, height and hazardous material selectable restrictions with three years of map updates. There is also Bluetooth and a standard reversing camera as well as DAB, CD and a USB port for iPad and other devices.
Mr Rodrigo said that the service intervals for the 515 are 30,000km, 12 months or 600 hours whichever comes first and warranty is three years, 100,000 or 2000 hours again, whichever comes first.
We’re going to try to grab a Superlow for an extended test in the near future so keep a look out for that.
