Sydney-based GMK Logistics is the latest operator to add a Mercedes-Benz Actros to its fleet, the next-generation vehicle replacing an older prime mover for floor-covering deliveries in and around Sydney.
Owned by Perth-based CTI Logistics, GMK Logistics has depots in Brisbane, Newcastle, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. It offers linehaul services between all capital cities, the work handled by its fleet of subcontractors, while its own fleet of 53 small and medium trucks – and the one prime mover – deal with local Sydney deliveries.
When the time came for that American-style prime mover to be updated, CTI suggested GMK opt for a new Actros from Daimler Trucks Perth. GMK says the model has settled in well in Sydney and is already producing some very impressive fuel economy figures.
"The fuel economy figures they are getting represent a 25 per cent improvement in fuel economy over the old truck," says CTI Logistics Commercial Manager, Glenn Brown.
"That is significant."
Mr Brown said positive talk in the industry pointed him towards the Daimler product.
"We are very happy with our decision to go with the Mercedes-Benz," he says.
The 2651 Actros is now hauling a B-double set of floor coverings throughout Sydney by day, while switching over to a Newcastle run by night.
GMK Logistics General Manager of Operations, David Knagge, says his drivers are very impressed with the truck.
"They love it," he says.
"It is a big improvement and the drivers really like the comfort, the vision and all of the safety features."
Those safety features include autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and radar cruise control, among others.
The Actros family is powered by new six-cylinder engines available in 11, 13 and 16-litre formats. The 2651 Actros hard at work on GMK's fleet is a 13-litre unit, producing 510hp and 2500Nm. It's mated to a 12-speed automated manual transmission.
