Goldstar Transport chooses Cat

"Partnership integral to success," says MD
Western Australian transport operator Goldstar Transport says a business partnership with Cat Trucks has played a significant role its success.
Cat Trucks work in the Perth-based operation hauling freight from urban distribution to long-haul triple roadtrains servicing Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland.
Goldstar Managing Director, Sean Carren, says Cat Trucks and the WA Caterpillar dealership, WesTrac, are key business partners in the Goldstar business model.
"What really attracts us to the Cat Trucks is the backup and support from Caterpillar. The maintenance and backup across Western Australia is great. It doesn't matter where you go there's always a WesTrac mechanic," he said.
Goldstar places a strong emphasis on supplying good equipment for drivers.
"You can have the best truck in the world [but] if you don't put a good person in the driver’s seat, you won't get good results. Cat Trucks are solid performers, they start every day and I rarely see them on a breakdown report, exceptionally rarely actually. They do a very solid job with the good people we put in them," Mr Carren said.
"The guys enjoy driving them, they are certainly less fatigued. The automated manual transmission has definitely helped in that area. But the trucks are just nice to drive, they present well on the road, they sit well on the road," he added.
Driver Rob Johnson said that while at first he was a little dubious of the trucks, he now agrees with his boss: "The more you drive them the better they are, they drive beautifully. Good vision, they are comfortable. Everything is within easy reach," Mr Johnson said.
Coming from a background driving other makes of American iron, Rob Johnson sees a significant difference with the Cat Trucks.
"You can drive the old girls and you work hard all day. With this Cat Truck, you can drive all day and you get out and it is like you've just come to work. You feel fresh, there is no effort in it," he said.
With more than a hundred men and women drivers in the Goldstar fleet, Sean Carren sees his staff as the foundation of his business.
"They are good people and you like to give them good equipment. Caterpillar represents giving those guys good equipment," Mr Carren said.
As the biggest operator of Cat Trucks in the West, the Goldstar operation runs 18 Cat Trucks, from the CT610s through all configurations to the CT630HD that pulls a triple road train on haulage runs to the Pilbara and across the top through the Northern Territory to deliver in Queensland.
Goldstar runs more than 50 Caterpillar engines across the fleet and Sean Carren said he has been impressed with the reliability of the Caterpillar C15 engine.
The Goldstar MD said his business model is based on realising that transport is a people business. This means developing networks, establishing respect with business partners and learning the art of delegation.
"In business you need to realise you can't do everything yourself. You need good people around you and you need good business partners. If you work with your customer and give the customer more than what they need and understand the customer's business then you'll do well," he said.
And in his business model, Sean Carren sees Caterpillar as a key business partner.
"The support they give us is phenomenal, not just around the Cat Trucks but a large percentage of the balance of our fleet is Caterpillar powered so we have a strong allegiance to the brand."
