Two Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian award recipients had their heroic efforts formally acknowledged on Saturday night at the Australian Trucking Association’s annual Trucking Australia conference.
Garth Hayes and Matthew Mitchell were hosted at the event as part of the Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian award they had received during the previous year.
Andrew Moffatt, Bridgestone Australia and New Zealand Managing Director, was on hand to recognise the drivers and their deeds: "These drivers are very worthy Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian inductees and we have been very pleased to share their stories," he said.
Garth Hayes rescued an injured cyclist without a second thought for his own safety while Matthew Mitchell displayed great compassion by comforting a fatally wounded motorist.
The efforts of Greg Camilleri, a third recent Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian inductee, were also celebrated. Greg, who was also invited to the event but was unable to attend, showed no hesitation in assisting an out of control driver in the middle of a busy freeway.
"Each of these drivers had very different experiences with different outcomes. However, in each instance all three acted calmly, rationally and compassionately," Mr Moffatt said. "It was great to have two of them together in the one room for the first time as their stories were re-told and providing another chance to thank and congratulate them." The Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian award honours the great community service performed by professional truck drivers who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist those around them during the course of their normal work.
