When Don Einam began searching for a hardy vehicle to carry on with his volunteer work with charity support service provider Outback Links, an Iveco Daily 4x4 ticked all his boxes.
Outback Links provides skilled volunteers to assist families on remote properties in times of need, including natural disasters, following the loss or injury of a loved one, or at harvest or muster time. To that end, Don's volunteering works sees the Daily traversing long distances over the tough outback roads of Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
Powered by a 3.0-litre, four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel good for a claimed 125kW and 400Nm, the 4x4 Daily is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. With a GVM of 4495kg it can still be driven on a standard car licence – a 5500kg GVM model is also available.
Don and his wife Lyndell put the Daily's 3500kg towing capacity to good use, the pair hauling a 3500kg off-road caravan to give them a comfortable base from which they can carry out their vital work for four to six months of each year.
Don's Daily features a custom tray and canopy, along with a bull bar he made himself plus a winch, LED driving lights, dual battery system, reversing camera, long-range fuel tank and roof-mounted solar panels.
The couple also carry a comprehensive range of tools to allow Don to carry out an array of maintenance work on outback properties, along with a three-metre inflatable boat with 15hp outboard motor.
Don says he decided to step up from his earlier vehicle, a Toyota Troop Carrier, because he needed something with additional towing capacity. He was also attracted to the Daily 4x4's rugged solid front axle and constant four-wheel drive.
After two years of ownership, Don says the Daily has amply proven its worth.
"It's excellent on rough dirt roads with corrugations – we needed something that could get us over some pretty wild roads at times and the Daily has done the job for me," he says.
