Hino Australia has released a video of highlights from the 2014 Dakar Rally, putting fans of the epic off-road event in thick of the action with veteran campaigners, Hino Team Sugawara.
The seven-minute clip reveals the trials and tribulations of contesting the gruelling race as experienced by father-and-son entrants Teruhito and Yoshimasa Sugawara, as they battle their way through the rugged South American countryside on their way to first and second place in the Under 10-litre truck class.
Teruhito, in his 357kW (485hp) Hino 500 Series race truck, claimed 12th outright in the truck division and won the Under 10-litre class in this year’s event, which was contested over January 5-18.
His father, 72-year-old Dakar icon Yoshimasa, came home second with his new 8.9-litre Hino – a truck he was essentially testing and developing in anticipation of a full-on assault on next year’s title.
It was the 32nd Dakar Rally contested by Yoshimasa and the 23rd successive year that Hino Team Sugawara has fielded Hino trucks in the event, which this year took in 9374 kilometres over 13 days.
The course took in the vast deserts of Chile and Argentina and the soaring Andes Mountains, the backdrop – and often extreme altitude – serving as the ultimate test of man and machine for the trucks, cars, buggies, bikes and quads that took part.
The clip below gives a great insight into the terrain covered by the historic event, and the hardships with which Hino Team Sugawara was faced as it raced its way to yet another victory.
