Hino's all-new 500 Series Standard Cab range embraces 54 variants across the FC, FD and FE model lineup.
“We are confident we can effectively support almost any application in the Australian medium-duty segment,” said Daniel Petrovski, Hino Australia’s Manager of Product Strategy.
The FC range, including the popular factory-built tipper model, now joins the FD at 11,000kg GVM – a significant increase in payload when compared to previous FC models at 10,400kg GVM – and the FE model has GVMs of 12,000kg and 14,000kg.
There are three Standard Cab variants: Short Cab (FC); a Rest Cab with ADR42 sleeper compliance (FD and FE) and Crew Cab (FD and FE).
The FE Crew Cab is new to the Hino range and will be the only Japanese 14,000kg 4x2 Crew Cab model in the medium duty market.
Powering the range is a new A05 five-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine, derived from the A09 six-cylinder engine that powers heavy-duty 500 Series Wide Cab models in Australia.
(Detroit Diesel did a similar ‘cut and shut’ job on the Series 60 in 1993, creating the Series 50 four-banger).
The A05 engine has three power ratings: FC 1124 and FD 1124 models score the A05-TE engine, with 240hp at 2300rpm and 794Nm of torque at 1400rpm; FE 1424 crew models get the A05-TD with 240hp at 2300rpm and 833Nm at 1400rpm and FD 1126 and FE 1426 models receive the A05C-TC, with 260hp at 2300rpm and 882Nm at 1400rpm.
The new A05 engine produces as much torque as the larger J08 engine in the 500 Series Wide Cab models and has 10 to 20 per cent more torque than the J07 five-cylinder engine in the outgoing Standard Cab vehicles.
Auxiliary braking is via a Jacobs Engine Brake or Jake brake, in combination with an exhaust brake.
The A05 can also be specified with a 343Nm live-drive PTO driven at 100 per cent engine speed.
Reduced emissions are another benefit of the all-new A05 engine that meets Japan’s stringent post-Post New Long Term (pPNLT) emissions standards – the Japanese equivalent of the European Euro 6 emissions standards.
Hino offers an expanded choice of transmission options for the 500 Series Standard Cab models. A six-speed Allison 2500 automatic transmission across the cab/chassis range, in addition to six-speed and seven-speed manual and Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) options.
The FE model is fitted with a new MX07 seven-speed manual gearbox, offering one more gear than its rivals.
Unique to the Hino AMT transmissions, a shift dial gear selector on the dashboard for R, N and D selection is complemented by a shift lever on the steering column, to switch the transmission mode between auto and manual, as well as to select gears.
All Standard Cab FD and FE manual and AMT transmission variants are fitted with the Hino Stop Start System, automatically stopping and restarting the engine when the vehicle is stopped.
FD and FE models receive Light Emitting Diode (LED) headlights, LED fog lights and LED daytime running Lights.
An ergonomically-designed dash layout features all-new instrumentation with large, easy-to-read dial speedometer and tachometer and a central LED Multi-Information Display.
Another first for Japanese medium-duty trucks in Australia is a multi-function steering wheel, with rotary switches for the Multi-Information Display and adaptive cruise control.
In addition to Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and reverse camera, the 500 Series Standard Cab is the first Japanese truck in Australia to offer a Pre-Collision System (PCS) that includes Safety Eye (SE), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Pedestrian Detection (PD).
PCS is an active safety system integrating camera and radar technology and can detect potential collisions with another vehicle, a pedestrian or other object.
PCS detects the vehicle ahead via Safety Eye, and warns the driver both audibly and visually on the LCS Multi Information Display. If the driver fails to react to the imminent danger, PCS can engage Autonomous Emergency Braking to apply the brakes to reduce the vehicle’s speed.
Also standard are anti lock braking system (ABS), traction control, lane departure warning, driver SRS airbag, ECE R29-rated cab strength (single cab), Easy Start and ADR84/00 front underrun protection system (FUPS).
“For Hino Australia’s current customers, all of the safety advances in the all-new 500 Standard Cab should not come as a surprise,” concluded Mr Petrovski.
We’ll have a hands-on report on the Hino Standard Cab 500 Series next week.
