The driving skills of Swedish truckie Daniel Olsson were recently put the test when he recently fell prey to a ‘Candid Camera’-style stunt staged by Scania.
Scania will shortly be holding its 2014 Scania Driver Competitions in a variety of locations around the world, and to help spread the word it lured Olsson into a nightmarish pick-up he won’t forget – and all before a number of hidden cameras that transformed the sting into a carefully orchestrated social media campaign.
First, Olsson arrives at a warehouse where he’s met the mysterious client, one ‘Dr Sullivan’. Dr Sullivan, an actor, then directs Olsson to guide his truck through a veritable maze of pallets and crates and then load one particular wooden box, before asking the driver to accompany him to his office.
That’s the cue for Scania’s team of special-effects wizards to spring into action. The box contains a high-powered speaker, while the team also fits a see-through holographic display screen to the passenger side mirror of Olsson’s truck.
We’ll let you watch the clip for yourself, but rest assured that when Olsson and Dr Sullivan return to the truck and start heading for the warehouse’s exit, all hell breaks loose…
The point of going to all this trouble and expense? Scania says truck drivers require sharp skills and quick wits to carry out their job – skills that will soon be under intense scrutiny in many countries around the globe in the marque's upcoming 2014 Scania Driver Competitions.
Truck drivers may not often go up against torturous labyrinths or contend with pre-historic monsters threatening to burst through their trailer’s curtains, but they do need a broad range of skills and a logical approach to problem solving – and honing those skills is what the Scania Driver Competitions are all about.
There’s no official word yet on whether the Scania Driver Competitions will be coming to Australia but keep an ear to the ground – and maybe sleep with one eye open!
