The major truck licence categories in Australia are as follows:
• Light Rigid
• Medium Rigid
• Heavy Rigid
• Heavy Combination
• Multi Combination
A Light Rigid heavy-vehicle licence will let you drive the trucks at the light-duty end of the spectrum up to specified GVM (gross vehicle mass) and axle limits. Multi Combination licence, on the other hand, will let you drive just about any truck on the road, up to and including those giants of the Outback, multi-trailer road trains.
The heavy vehicle licence system is graduated – the higher the grade, the heavier the trucks you can drive, while the level of required training and experience increases too.
However, the requirements to achieve each class of licence can vary from state to state, as can the process that must be undertaken to obtain each licence class. Yes, Australia has a Heavy Vehicle National Law (which, despite the name, operates everywhere except Western Australia and the Northern Territory), but vehicle registration and licensing is handled by the relevant authority in each state and territory.
