IAA: Volkswagen previews next Transporter

Tristar design study appearing at Hannover's IAA commerical vehicle expo could be successor to current T5 commercials
Volkswagen has rolled out its Tristar concept vehicle at the Hanover IAA – a commercial vehicle show in Germany.
While the Tristar boasts four-wheel drive with a rear diff lock and 30mm raised ride height, it's possible the concept vehicle will form the basis of an entire 'T6' range of vehicles to succeed the current T5 generation of Transporter, which is now over a decade old in Australia.
Styling cues for the Tristar appear to have been lifted from up! and Polo/Golf passenger vehicles. Measuring nearly 4.8m in length, the Tristar is 2.3m wide and 2.1m high. A 2.0-litre diesel developing 150kW and 450Nm drives through a seven-speed DSG (dual-clutch transmission) to all four 17-inch 'Rocadura' alloy wheels.
To showcase the extended-cab concept's potential, Volkswagen engineers and designers have equipped and configured Tristar with a blend of mobile office and off-road-capable load lugger attributes.
"The Tristar shows an unprecedented combination of all the good features of the T model series," said Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Chairman of the Board of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
"It demonstrates its potential and proves it is still the ultimate benchmark. Hence the Tristar combines yesterday and tomorrow. On the occasion of the anniversary of the first Syncro concept car, it strikingly shows the company's all-wheel drive expertise and demonstrates its future viability.
"We take the needs of our customers seriously and are continuing to develop our best-seller with great purpose. We are thus redefining the benchmark of the class with each and every new model.
