The Tasmanian division of Veolia Environmental Services says its first Isuzu FYH 2000 8x4 has proven to be a strong performer, after racking up over 73,000 kilometres in the Apple Isle since its purchase last year.
Veolia wasted no time in buying the twin-steer truck, which was the very first example to reach the island state. According to James O'Brien, Veolia Maintenance Coordinator for North Tasmania, the model is standout in its local fleet.
"The FY is the only Isuzu eight-wheeler truck we’ve got, and it’s the first one of its kind in Tasmania – we were essentially the first ones to buy the twin-steer 8x4 right off the production line," he says.
Veolia provides a range of environmental solutions across the fields of water, waste and energy management, servicing clients in sectors spanning heavy industry, commercial, government and residential.
In Tasmania the FYH 2000 8x4 has been pressed into a waste management role and has quickly found favour for its manoeuvrability and handling, along with its ability to operate in hilly terrain – an aspect assisted by the truck's Allison HD 4430 six-speed automatic transmission.
"There are a lot of challenges here with hills and the automatic transmission in the FY is great compared to the manual-transmission truck we were working with before, as we were constantly changing gears," Mr O'Brien says.
"The truck also travels on gravel roads in and out of tip sites and waste transfer stations, and we’ve found the truck's manoeuvrability and turning circle is ideal for getting into tight spots."
The FYH 2000 8x4 joins 14 other Isuzu F Series models in Veolia's North Tasmania fleet, the trucks all set up for hook-lift, rear-lift, pantech and liquid applications.
Mr O'Brien says Isuzu trucks have proven themselves to be valuable assets throughout his career.
"I've been working with Isuzu products for a long time and I know the resale of the Isuzu has always been great compared to any other truck out there," he says.
"Maintenance on Isuzu trucks is cost-effective and realistic, while in terms of reliability we drive service to service and the trucks are very rarely off the road."
