Isuzu announces Cummins engine for F Series

At a press conference prior to the Japan Mobility Show 2023, Isuzu announced that a new engine would become available in the near future for its F Series trucks

The engine, a 6.7-litre six-cylinder turbo-diesel is a derivative of the Cummins engine of the same capacity and will be built under licence at Isuzu’s Togichi manufacturing plant.

The Togichi plant manufactures engines for Isuzu’s heavy, medium and light trucks, as well as industrial engines (construction machinery engines, marine engines, and power source engines), and parts for axles and diffs.

Engines manufactured in this plant are either supplied to vehicle production plants located in other areas, directly shipped to construction machinery manufacturers or exported all around the world.

The new engines for the FSR/D, FV and FTS models in the Isuzu range will be called the DB6A and mated to Allison automatic transmissions only – no manuals will be offered.

The Cummins B6.7 has outputs of 200hp to 325hp torque of between 773Nm and 1017Nm.

Isuzu’s Chief engineer Simon Humphries said that the first of the new F Series trucks would become available in our market in late 2024 with the first being the FR and FS with the 5.2-litre four-cylinder engine while the new 6.7 Cummins-powered trucks will be arriving in early 2025.

“Our six-cylinder F Series model range with new engine is a first-class product and an outcome of the alliance with Cummins, representing one of the first major product initiatives from Isuzu Motors’ strategic partnerships,” said Humphries.

“The medium-duty truck range has long benefitted from Isuzu’s expertise in incorporating industry benchmark components.

“In our heavy-duty FX and FY model ranges, we’ll see the introduction of our Euro-VI (Step C) 6UZ1 Isuzu engine and once again, a shift to auto only with Allison HD4430 across all models,” he continued.

“The trucks will also receive higher capacity Meritor steer axles and Meritor full-air disc brakes on all axles, plus a comprehensive ADAS suite.

“Our entire new release builds on our story of application engineered trucks that deliver on the promise of reliability.

“Starting with the all-new four-cylinder F Series models, continuing to the N Series and all the way through to our FX and FY models, we’re confident that the next-generation Isuzu truck range will meet and exceed the expectations of our customers for years to come,” he concluded.

Other changes to the F Series will the LED lighting, SCR and DPD with the necessity for AdBlue, a new cab design and, of course, the new DB6A engine.
