After operating a 2010 IVECO Daily cab/chassis for many years, Merredin Glazing Services based in WA’s central wheat belt, had no hesitation in again turning to the Daily when it was time for new trucks, opting for an interesting combination.
The choice to purchase a 50C Dual Cab was an easy one given the previous model’s performance, according to company owner Phil Van Der Merwe.
“The previous generation Daily was a fantastic truck so I had no reservations in purchasing a new one,” Phil said.
“We opted for the 205 horsepower engine which provides a heap of power and torque not only for work, but to tow our caravan or boat on weekends and holidays.”
The Daily is fitted with a 4.5 tray with an A rack to allow Phil and his team of glaziers to transport a wide range of glass to residential, commercial and mining customers.
Phil said that even with the high output engine and loaded A rack which catches the wind, the Daily is still returning good fuel figures of around 13 litres per hundred kilometres.
To assist in transporting the fragile loads, the Daily was specified with rear airbag suspension, a feature that is extremely useful according to Phil.
“As well as providing a suppler ride, the rear airbag suspension also assists when loading and unloading the truck,” he said.
“We can lower the height of the tray which makes it much easier to handle the glass loads.
Phil said that despite having a passenger car four wheel drive in the garage at home, because of its comfort levels, the Daily 50C was normally the vehicle of choice even when the family went on holidays.
“My wife Kristy and the kids prefer to travel in the Daily especially on longer trips,” he said.
“The Daily is one of the most comfortable vehicles I’ve ever driven – we recently drove from Merredin to Broome (almost 4,500 kilometres return) towing the caravan and the Daily did it easily and we rode in complete comfort.”
To provide Merredin Glazing Services with additional flexibility, particularly when accessing mining sites, the company also operates a Daily 4x4 Dual Cab.
Phil selected the optional 5.5 tonne GVM allowing for greater carrying capacity as well as providing the ability to legally tow large A rack trailers and to transport up to six workers.
Along with its long list of standard off road features such as front, centre and rear differential locks and double low range transmission, Phil also selected optional 37-inch tyres for additional traction on mining sites or for when accessing his favourite camping spots on weekends.
“Access to some of the mining sites can be quite demanding especially after rain,” Phil said.
“We deliver glass there for some of the large machines and with the Daily 4x4 we have the added peace of mind of knowing we’ll get there without any issues. It’s a very capable four wheel drive as standard and doesn’t require any additional modifications,” Phil concluded.
