At the recent launch of the Daily 4x4, Iveco’s Head of External Affairs Ron Grasso said that discussions between Iveco and Navistar were in their "final stages".
Anticipating questions from the assembled media for the press conference announcing the Daily, Mr Grasso came straight to the point: "Let’s talk about the elephant in the room," he said. "We are in the final stages of discussion with Navistar regarding International." Mr Grasso said that it was "highly likely" that Iveco, through its umbrella company CNH Industrial, would be acquiring the distribution rights for International trucks in Australia. Mr Grasso indicated that staff at Iveco's plant in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong – the plant that produced International trucks for many decades until the Iveco takeover in 1992 – have been informed of the deal. Historically there has been a strong link between the two companies – the top-selling vocational truck, the ACCO, was an International model long before it bore the Iveco badge, and the Iveco facility still utilises a variety of presses and tooling for this model that date well back into International's past.
This deal then represents something of a local homecoming for the International brand in more ways than one, and would no doubt see the International ProStar, which was shown at last year's Brisbane truck show (pictured, in white/maroon), imported and distributed in Australia (and in Australian specification) by Iveco.
We'll give you more details as they come to hand.
