K&S Freighters has just received a hefty boost to its operations in the west, with the transport company’s Bunbury (WA) facility recently receiving 12 new V8-powered Scania R 560s.
The trucks will largely find themselves pressed into a 27.5m road train role plying the Bunbury to Perth route, although five of the dozen will have hydraulics and hub-reduction axles to handle logging and wood chip transport.
The order comes after K&S experienced a high degree of success with the R 560 V8s in use at its Wagga Wagga depot in NSW, which clock up around 300,000km per annum hauling B-doubles between Albury and Brisbane.
Scania’s National Fleet Sales Manager, Steven Alberse, said the drivers at K&S were happy to find themselves behind the wheel of a new Scania.
“The replaced vehicles were early models, so for the drivers the switch to Scania has also brought significant benefits in terms of safety, driver comfort, and in-cab ambience, not to mention access to connectivity technology such as Bluetooth,” he said.
“Their drivers, many of whom are long-term employees, have warmly embraced all of these features.
“While the drivers are quickly coming to enjoy the Scania experience we are confident that the frugal Scania engines will deliver for K&S.
“The five vehicles being used on the logging and wood chipping activities are pulling walking-floor trailers. The hub-reduction axles give the vehicles greater ability to cope with varying conditions in the forests, for example in the wet season when the hilly logging routes can become boggy.
The new trucks all feature two-pedal Fully Automated Scania Opticruise gear changing and Scania Retarder, while new alloy bumpers were fitted by Advanced Herd Bullbars.
The finishing touch was the K&S red paint scheme, which was carried out at the Scania factory.
