The NSW and Federal Government’s plan to extend the duplication of the Pacific Highway from Sydney to Queensland by 2020 is one step closer to reality, with the news that Lend Lease has been awarded the contract to design and build a 23km upgrade of the road near Port Macquarie.
In a joint statement with NSW Acting Premier Andrew Stoner, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said the upgrade – which stretches from the Oxley Highway intersection north to Kundabung – would enhance road safety while reducing travel times.
“This is the latest instalment in the Coalition Government’s $5.64 billion commitment to the Pacific Highway and getting the duplication all the way to the Queensland border completed within this decade,” he said.
Stoner, who is also the State Member for Oxley, said the upgrade would see new bridges built over the Hastings and Wilson Rivers and the construction of a major interchange at Blackmans Point Road.
“The upgrade will also have 'one-in-a-100-year' flood immunity, ensuring local farmers and the community can get to and from homes and workplaces all year round,” he said.
The contract for the upgrade of the Pacific Highway north of Kundabung to Kempsey will be awarded shortly, while the Oxley Highway to Kundabung project is earmarked for completion by late 2016.
The NSW Government and the Federal Government have been jointly funding the upgrade of the Pacific Highway since 1996 (Taree bypass pictured).
