Light-duty truck sales lead the charge

Sales of new trucks and vans surged ahead in January, with smaller trucks behind the bulk of the momentum

Another year of truck sales is off and running, with the latest Truck Industry Council (TIC) TMARK sales figures showing 1998 new trucks and vans were registered in the month of January. That's a significant rise of 7.9 per cent over January 2020, before the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic had begun to bite.

The heavy-duty truck segment grew marginally by 1.5% (597 units) compared to the same month last year, while the medium-duty segment contracted by 15.9%. But the strongest performance lay within the light-duty truck segment, where the 729 new registrations recorded last month equated to massive growth of 42.9%.

The light-duty van segment, meanwhile, was subdued, its 306 new registrations representing a contraction of 4.1%.

Here's the breakdown of the top five brands in each major segment, and their sales variance compared to January 2020…
