Mack Trucks America has shown off its newest model, the Mack Anthem, in its home town of Allentown, Pennsylvania, this morning. The new model, available in day cab, 48-inch flat-top sleeper and 70-inch stand-up sleeper variants, is the result of feedback from thousands customers, says Mack, with the company claiming the truck is "a re-engineered, redesigned and reimagined interpretation of what today's highway truck should be".
It also says it is one of the most significant new trucks in the history of Mack Trucks – a big call indeed considering some of the legendary models to bear the Mack name.
The Anthem features an all-new bonnet and bumper design and optimised aerodynamics to improve efficiency. Inside the cab, improvements have been made to both the driving and sleeping areas for better ergonomics, functionality and convenience. The gauges in the dash have been raised, while the controls for the heating/cooling and the transmission have been moved closer to the driver.
A new flat-bottomed steering wheel allows for easier entry and egress, and also contains the controls for the cruise control and audio functions. New seating is also on offer, developed specifically for the Anthem, with a multitude of fabric and feature options available, including a swivel base for easy access to the bunk.
The Anthem will be available with either the Mack MP7 (425hp/1560lbft) or MP8 (505hp/1860lbft) engines, with the 12-speed mDRIVE automated manual transmission as standard behind either engine. Mack no longer offers the MP10 engine in America.
While it will be some time before we see the Anthem here, the word from Mack Trucks Australia is that it is intending to bring the model Downunder. As Dean Bestwick, Vice President of Mack Trucks Australia said, "Whilst the Mack Anthem is currently only for the North American market, we're committed to making it a reality for Australian and New Zealand operators.
"What's particularly exciting is the inclusion of a fully integrated stand-up sleeper on the Mack Anthem, and its huge potential in the Australian and New Zealand markets."
Mr Bestwick also said the Anthem may also become available here in the form of rigid models.
"Whilst the North American Mack Anthem is primarily a serious on-highway truck, we feel there would certainly be a demand Downunder for a rigid version in vocational applications."
Don't hold your breath though, as Mr Bestwick was adamant about making sure the Anthem was right for local conditions before it would be released on the Aussie market.
"Like all global releases, we will not launch a product locally until we've extensively validated it in the unique and challenging conditions of the Australian and New Zealand markets," he said.
