Melbourne motorists passing the eastern suburbs railway station of Mitcham should now enjoy a considerably smoother passage, thanks to the recent completion of the Mitcham grade separation and station upgrade.
The $197 million project (artist's impression shown), which was recently opened by the Victorian Premier, Denis Napthine, involved the elimination of two notorious level crossings: one on Mitcham Road and a second at Rooks Road.
It’s estimated the boom gates at these level crossings were down for approximately 45 per cent of the time during peak periods, causing significant traffic snarls.
Napthine said the completion of the project would provide relief for both rail commuters and motorists.
“This project will not only benefit the 3800 passengers who use the Mitcham Station each weekday, but also the 16,000 vehicles per day travelling on Mitcham Road and the 9500 vehicles per day travelling on Rooks Road,” he said.
Victoria’s Acting Minister for Public Transport and Minister for Roads, David Hodgett, said the project was just part of a broader program targeting railway level crossings.
“This project is part of a commitment to remove level crossings and invest in transport infrastructure across Melbourne,” he said.
“The $197 million of improvements are just part of the government’s $418.6 million level crossing blitz.
“Major construction is underway to remove the level crossing at Springvale Road in Springvale and planning is well and truly underway at other sites.”
